English to Dutch translation

Dutch – is a West Germanic language and a mother-tongue of the majority of the population of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Suriname, the three member states of the Dutch Language Union.

Dutch is a first spoken language for about 22 million and a second language for another ca. 5 million people worldwide.

Dutch stands close to English and German and is said to be “between them”. Apart from not having undergone the High German consonant shift, Dutch—same as English—is also distinguished from German by the total abandonment of the grammatical case system, the relative rarity of the Germanic umlaut, and a more stable and predictable morphology. Dutch has effectively two genders grammatically, but this distinction has far fewer grammatical outcomes than in German. Dutch shares with German the use of “subject-verb-object” word order in main clauses and “subject-object-verb” in subordinate clauses. Dutch vocabulary is predominantly Germanic and has the same Germanic core as English, while incorporating more Roman borrowings than German.

The Dutch dialects spoken in Belgium are collectively known as Flemish (Vlaams). They differ to some extent from the “classical” Dutch spoken in the Netherlands in terms of intonation and pronunciation, and there are minor differences in vocabulary, including loanwords from French and English not present in Standard Dutch; various dialects have their own names (e.g., "Hollands", "Limburgs", "Brabants").
