Spanish language was further developed in the 15th century pushing it much closer to the modern one. Spanish now follows Mandarin Chinese ranking second among the most natively spoken languages on the globe. It is relatively fast to learn and many students study it as their foreign/second language.

In the beginning of XXI century there were ca. 360 million people speaking Spanish as a mother-tongue and a total of 420 million Spanish speakers around the globe. Today these figures are close to 400 and 500 million people respectively. Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and is used as an official language of the European Union and Mercosur.

While the comparison isn't completely accurate, the differences between the Spanish of Spain and the Spanish of Latin America are something like the differences between British English and American English. People from throughout the Spanish-speaking world can communicate with each other as easily as people throughout the English-speaking world can. There are, naturally, differences, more so in the spoken language than in writing, but they aren't so extreme to prevent understanding between Spanish-speaking people from different parts of the world.
